Raw poem on the drawing of Eve (Anthony D’Ambrosio)

Eve

Anthony D’Ambrosio

The bones of her hands now graze what is left
at her collar, across her abdomen
fingering in disbelief, lightly, afraid
of what her touch will find there;
a question turns her lips,
bottom withdrawn into a pursed
tremor, top lip capped over it,
sluice gate against a coming wail.
I see her the moment before she falls to weep
on the bathroom floor, before she clutches her figure,
To pull back into herself what has passed:
She was lied to.
Her mouth is now silent, shut
In the very first lost voice,
and there is no breath
In the cavity in her belly,
where her other hand cannot find
or even remember what had once been there,
the garden that had grown inside,
the golden fruit that she knew before
would one day be born from her.
Her gaze already begins the fall,
pulls down the wrinkles of her lips,
towards her neck
towards her bare breast
towards her belly, concaving into a sigh,
to her pelvis, closed in the wince of her thighs
towards the bashful knees of a child
towards the feet of a dancer
to the husk that lies beside her.
What hope can there be now,
that all is lost?
