It was brought to my attention that there was a way of helping people every day on a very large scale. At first I thought to myself, “of course, sign me up!” I believed myself to be a confident, easy going person who loved talking to people and that it would be easy to jump right in. As I dove into learning about working for a Health and Wellness program and how the process works, I took the first few steps of the journey and was finding it would require a great leap of faith and moving out of any zone I thought comfortable. Biting my nails and with small beads of sweat, I continued to take further steps. I have committed to this journey and continue to find myself getting stuck and having to grow beyond who I am every day.
Notice I used the word “I ” a lot in that paragraph. Which is exactly the opposite of what this world craves. When we are put to a challenge, we have no choice but to grow new brain cells to help us adjust. After so many of these moments, it was made very clear that I was focusing on the wrong person, myself. When we are nervous, scared, intimidated, emotionally paralyzed or overwhelmed, it is usually because we are focusing on the wrong thing. If we can truly think about others and how we can best serve them, the focus is removed from ourself and transferred to the one who really matters. Funny how, when we focus on others, it removes all of those negative feelings off of our chest. It almost seems selfish. The world in it’s entirety cannot help but to be a better place when we are always looking to serve those around us.
This morning, I listened to a homeless man say, “I didn’t run, I stayed and took care of the community and took care of things. I don’t want any recognition or I will walk away. God loves you and will always be there with you, even in the dark when you feel like the lowest thing on earth, you are not. That is satin. I will not stop helping this community until I can no longer lift my hands.” This a man who lives on the streets and serves coffee to others, serving his community as if he has all the time and money in the world. How beautiful! It is clear how God is present! It is exactly what was accomplished by dying on the cross. When we can look to God or see God in others, that is when and only when, our load is removed and the fullness of beauty begins to pour out. We don’t have to struggle in this world alone, no matter how dark times become. Look to others and beam gratitude.
I will leave you with 3 things to remember :
1. When you give to and serve others, you gain more than you could ever imagine.
2. Be humble.
3. Talk to people. You will find joy, pain, stories, solutions, and great great beauty. There is no greater way to grow as an individual.
