How do you engage with mystery? Perhaps it’s the silence of sitting in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Maybe it’s through a meditative prayer with repetitive words that allow you to go deeper and deeper into the Rosary, Mercy of the Cross, or the Precious Blood of Jesus. Or do you spent time beholding beauty in art?
Art has a unique capacity to bring our hearts into deeper understanding – not because it broadcasts facts or solves all your problems. Because art draws us into mystery. Through sacred art, we are invited to bring our whole selves before the Lord. Whatever stirs or cries out within us, whatever feels barren or empty, we can pour out in prayer.
The mystery of the Eucharist has been explored artistically throughout the ages. Think of DaVinci’s iconic Last Supper, which invites the viewer more personally into the historical event, or Raphael’s masterful Disputation of the Holy Sacrament, which visualizes the Eucharist as the epic point of connection between heaven and earth. In this detail of Jan van Eyck’s detailed exploration of theology, the Mystic Lamb is adored by angels as his blood is poured into the sacramental cup.

The Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith – the ultimate mystery. The humble bread and wine are transformed to bring us into unity with God, to strengthen the bonds of charity between our heart’s and Christ’s, and to bring us into the Mystical Body of Christ (CCC 1416).
In her original painting, The Tabernacle, Kate depicts Mary, the new Ark of the Covenant, who held Christ within her inmost being, and who offers her son freely to us. Notice the face of Christ and His precious blood dripping from the Eucharist. Will we take Him into our hearts and our bodies?
Let’s take a moment to pray with this mystery and behold the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. In this painting, Mary looks at you with tenderness – with invitation. As we enter into this prayer, remember the sacrifice of the passion. His blood poured out on the cross for you. His side pierced. His hands stretched out.
During this time of prayer, we bring our sufferings, our intentions, our loved ones, and we place them at the foot of the cross. We entrust it all to the Precious Blood of Jesus.
Lord, have mercy on us,
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us,
Christ, hear us, Christ, graciously hear us.
God, the Father of heaven, Have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You, Who take away the sins of the world, Spare us, O Lord.
Lamb of God, You, Who take away the sins of the world, Graciously hear us,
O Lord Lamb of God, You, Who take away the sins of the world, Have mercy on us.
V. You have redeemed us, O Lord, in Your Blood.
R. And made us, for our God, a kingdom.
Almighty and Eternal God, You have appointed Your only-begotten Son the Redeemer of the world, and willed to be appeased by His Blood. Grant, we beg of You, that we may worthily adore this price of our salvation, and through its power be safeguarded from the evils of this present life, so that we may rejoice in its fruits forever in heaven. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
If this time of prayer blessed you, praise God! Let it sink in further.
