Visio Divina with the Annunciation

Pray with Us

The Annunciation begins in stillness. An ordinary room. A day in history. A simple prayer of surrender.

A message from heaven arrives. God breaks in through the angel Gabriel. Not to overwhelm, but to invite. The Annunciation is the moment where uncertainty meets grace. A single, radical response with an open heart unlocks the door to something beyond human understanding.

What does it feel like to be met there by a loving God? In the middle of your own ordinary unprepared life?

As you enter this experience of Visio Divina with Mary meeting the angel Gabriel, don’t rush to interpret the image. Let it unfold slowly. Let it speak to your heart. And listen for the quiet question it places within you: What is the Lord saying to me today?

Praying with sacred art can become a place of deep encounter with the Lord. Taking the time to sit with the Lord in prayer can re-orient our hearts. We are each invited into rest in prayer. To let the Holy Spirit live and breathe within us. Today, let’s meet the Holy Spirit with Mary by praying with beauty.

Meet the Holy Spirit at the Annunciation

We don’t need to overthink praying with sacred art. The Annunciation begins with curiosity, openness, and saying, Come, Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to open the eyes of your heart. What do you see in this image?

Perhaps you notice the posture of each figure. Where are Mary and the angel Gabriel? What do you imagine Mary is feeling? What is she reaching for? Observe the expressions on their faces. Notice the stillness. Let your eyes rest wherever they are drawn. What else do you notice? The colors? The shape of a circle where hands meet? Maybe you’re drawn to the earnestness or purity of this profound moment.

Now place yourself in this image. Where are you? How do you feel? Take some time and meet God in prayer here. What is He saying to you through this painting?

What is the Lord saying to you?

Here, Mary says yes…. What strikes you personally about this image? What do you long for in your current season? Are there places in your life that you resist stillness? Do you believe God will meet you in the quiet, or only in productivity? How does Mary’s yes to the Holy Spirit speak to your heart, needs, and deepest longing?

What do you want to say to the Lord?

Ask God for what you need today. Remember, God is in the present moment. No detail is too small in your heart. He cares about you!

  • Ask Him for the grace to slow down
  • for increased trust and faith
  • for permission to rest without guilt
  • for a posture of receptivity like Mary

How can you receive the Lord?

After you’ve poured out your heart, the next step is to Remain with the image. Rest as the Mary rests in God’s provision. Model yourself after Mary, and allow yourself to be held by God’s presence. Let the Holy Spirit encounter you with tenderness and acceptance.

We are invited to enter deeper into the mystery of the Annunciation, to make space within our hearts for the life of Christ within us. Let us pray with the Mary to seek holiness in the simple, radical opportunities to say yes to love!
