Pause in Prayer with Padre Pio

We arrive on the feast day of Saint Padre Pio.

We are reminded of Pio’s devotion to bringing his faith to life by serving those in need of God’s healing and igniting weary hearts with passion for the Kingdom of God. In his time on earth, Padre Pio suffered through spiritual trials, public scrutiny, and attempts to stop his ministry. And yet he never stopped serving those around him. He humbly persevered through each trial with a spirit of courage and humility.

From his experiences wrestling with the enemy to the stigmata that pierced his hands, Padre Pio challenges us to look at every day as anything but ordinary by making room for God’s magnificent presence in our lives.

“What a dreadful thing war is! In every person wounded in the flesh, there is Jesus suffering.”
– Saint Padre Pio

At the heart of Pio’s ministry was his desire to see humanity share in the life of Christ. As a witness to both the First and Second World Wars, he showed a broken, dark, and war-torn world that Jesus suffers as we suffer. No matter what you are living through today, Padre Pio invites us to offer up our deepest suffering and greatest joy to the Lord.

Let’s enter into this time with the Lord.

Begin by arriving in the Lord’s presence- letting it envelope you and taking a pause to let the Holy Spirit fill this moment.

Take your time with this image. Let it gently enter into your senses without rushing to look for the meaning. What colors or details stand out to you? What do you notice about Padre Pio?

You might be drawn to the light resting on Padre Pio’s face or his soft and compassionate expression. Perhaps you are drawn to the flower in his hand- a symbol of his purity, humility, and devotion to Our Lady.

What does it mean to be alive in Christ?

Jesus is alive in our hearts, in our homes, in the sacraments, in the still moments kneeling before the Eucharist, and in the busy moments of our lives. His life, passion, and resurrection show us that there is never a day that goes by when His love is not present in our lives. How is He calling you to receive new life in Him?

What is inside your heart that needs healing?

Ask God to reveal what in your heart needs healing.

Perhaps you are carrying…

  • A yearning for something that has not come to pass.
  • Broken relationships in need of healing from the Holy Spirit.
  • Painful memories from the past.
  • Unanswered questions, grief, pain, or loss.

What joys or sufferings can you offer up to the Lord?

Let your eyes move to notice the blood on Padre Pio’s shoulder. What stirs in your heart as you take in this detail? Place yourself in this image. Whether you are in a season of joy or suffering and everything in between—take a moment to sit with what is coming to light. How is God leading you to take up the cross and follow him?

What do you want to ask the Lord?

Where in your life can you make room to meet the Lord in prayer? As you rest with this image of Padre Pio, ask the Lord to reveal the places in your life where He wants to meet you even deeper.

“Prayer is the best weapon we have, a key that opens the heart of God.” – Saint Padre Pio

Jesus, through the witness of Saint Padre Pio, teach me to remain close to you in prayer. I offer you my greatest joy and most painful sufferings.

Help me to carry my crosses with love, to receive your mercy, and to recognize you in those who suffer. Heal my mind, my body, and the broken places in my heart so I can be strengthened to serve you. Make my life an offering of prayer and charity.

Amen.
