Our world has a way of pulling our attention in all kinds of different directions.
Where has your attention been today? This week? This year?
If you’re reading this and feeling spread thin or your focus feels off, consider this an invitation to return your heart and mind to what matters most. Resting in the beauty of our Lord and surrendering your concerns to Him today.
This is the power of sacred art. It invites us to pause and be still- without screens, stimulation, or motion- drawing us deeper into what is true. In today’s Visio Divina, we will sit with this original painting of Our Lady of the Rosary by Kate Capato.
Take a moment to arrive in the peaceful presence of our Lord with this image of Our Lady of the Rosary. Allow your eyes to move slowly over the image and notice what you feel as you do.
Notice Mary, the Child Jesus, the rosary in her hand, the gold, the almond-shaped form surrounding them, and the four scenes in the corners. There is no need to take everything in at once. Begin with the detail that catches your attention.
Notice Mary’s face and her posture. Follow her gaze. Where does it lead and what happens to your own attention as you follow it?
Mary lived with her eyes fixed on Christ, treasuring his words, pondering the events of his life, and storing each moment in her heart, entrusting it to God. Even the ones she didn’t understand. Pope Saint John Paul II describes her as the incomparable model of contemplation: her gaze on Jesus was filled with love, wonder, and attentive understanding. In praying the Rosary, we enter into contact with Mary’s memories and her contemplative gaze.
Stay with the image for a moment. Notice how Mary holds Jesus. What might this closeness invite you to bring to Him in prayer?

The gold surrounding Mary and Jesus suggests the heavenly beauty to come. The almond-shaped form around them can invite us to reflect on the mystery of grace—something real and beautiful, yet beyond our full understanding. These are not meanings we have to decode; they can serve as openings for prayer.
We often think of gold as a regal color, associated with beauty, majesty, and abundance. But gold is also a reflective color. What does the gold color cause you to notice? Does the almond shape draw your eye toward the figures at the center? Stay with these colors as you sit with the mystery of Jesus, who is at the heart of the Rosary.
Now place yourself in this image. Where are you? How do you feel? Take some time and meet God in prayer here. What is He saying to you through this painting?
Now look toward the four corners of the artwork. Each one presents a mystery: the Nativity of the Lord, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and the Institution of the Eucharist.
Take them in one at a time. What details stand out in each scene? What do you notice about Jesus? The Nativity shows him entering our human life; the Crucifixion, giving himself in love; the Resurrection, rising from the dead; and the Institution of the Eucharist, giving himself to the Church. Let one scene hold your attention, and recall the Gospel mystery it portrays.
The Rosary is a prayer that has united generations of Christ’s followers. It is a Marian prayer but it is centered on contemplating Christ and the events of his life. Its mysteries invite us to look again at the Gospel, with Mary as our companion.

Visio Divina can begin simply: look at the whole image, linger with one detail, and listen in prayer. You might return to the face of Jesus, Mary’s hands, one of the corner scenes, or the rosary she holds.
The rosary in Mary’s hand is a reminder of the invitation to pray. Its beads lead us, one by one, through the mysteries of Christ’s life. As you look at it, consider choosing one mystery from the image and praying a decade slowly. The Rosary is a traditional path of prayer directed toward contemplation of Christ.
Mary’s presence in this image can help us bring our attention back to Jesus.
As you close this time of reflection, ask: What is this image helping me notice about Jesus? Is there a word, mystery, or detail I want to carry into the day? Bring that reflection to Christ in prayer, and ask Mary to help you listen to her Son and follow him.
Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary,
teach me to look in faith toward Jesus.
Help me ponder his life with a quiet heart,
listen to his word,
and follow him in the choices I make today.
Amen.
